Booty Brewish

It cracks me up whenever I see articles titled “Lose 10 pounds in 3 easy moves”, “7 days to a healthier you” or “5 rules to early retirement” – but that’s the mentality that permeates our culture right now – we want everything to be instant and effortless.

Whatever is it that you want - whether it is a better job, a fitter body (e.g. Beyonce’s bootylicious butt), a fruitful relationship (see Twitter #ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage), a comfortable living, YOU HAVE TO PUT IN THE DAMN WORK. And no, you can’t short-circuit by doing the min-efforts/max-results compact version of things. If you want to get there, you have to go full-on and all-in. Heaven doesn’t shower its doze of fortune to a handful of selected favourites - winners are those who persist – and God knows how many times they got slapped in the face before they made it.

Instant coffee hasn’t killed the art of coffee brewing - quite the contrary, it has actually inspire the revival to the grinder. Lesson? Anything that’s worth it takes time.

Above the modern quest for quick-fixes and instant gratification, there will always be a natural and inherent desire for the authentic over the synthetic, and a preference for the full-brew over the condensed.

Things that have taken time to build are those that could weather the storm. Success is the result of focused endeavour. If you want it - god sake, WORK IT!

Whatever you are physically…male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy—all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside.

—Cassandra Clare (Clockwork Angel)

Let’s not let anyone tell us that the Internet is going to murder the book, because the automobile has yet to murder the bicycle. The book, like the bicycle, is a perfect invention, and perfection dies hard. - William Giraldi

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you will know when you find it.

—Steve Jobs

The woman who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been.

—Albert Einstein

You see, I want a lot.
Maybe I want it all:
the darkness of each endless fall,
the shimmering light of each ascent.
So many are alive who don’t seem to care.
Casual, easy, they move in the world
as though untouched.

But you take pleasure in the faces
of those who know they thirst.
You cherish those
who grip you for survival.

You are not dead yet, it’s not too late
to open your depths by plunging into them
and drink in the life
that reveals itself quietly there.

—Rainer Maria Rilke, The Book of Hours
